Pre-Season
Screenings

Just as a check-up with a family physician or dentist is integral to staying healthy, the pre-season screen is a specialized annual assessment essential to reducing injury risk and maximizing physical performance.

Why Are Screens Important?

The importance of screens is widely recognized and they are required by professional sport organizations, professional dance companies, and top ballet schools world-wide.  Objective information gained from this assessment provides insight that a dancer can use to track development from year to year or can be used as baseline data in the event of an injury.  Screens are particularly important when starting at a new company or significantly increasing training hours.

How Does It Work?

The screen evaluates the elements that impact a dancer’s risk of injury including muscular strength and flexibility, movement patterns analysis, balance and proprioception, and cardiac performance.  Areas of increased risk are identified and addressed before they develop into full-blown injuries.  Different screens are available for professional, pre-professional, and recreational level dancers.

At the completion of the screen, the findings are reviewed and dancers are given a six-week customized training program designed to address areas of concern or desired improvement.  Dancers receive a follow up meeting at the end of the six weeks to address lingering concerns and provide additional training assessment and guidance.

Since all information obtained by the screen is considered private health information and is protected by HIPAA, it will be shared only with the dancer and parent/guardian.  This information is never shared with a company, unless at the request of a dancer, and will not be used to influence casting decisions or class placement.

What Do I Need To Know?

  • Please wear dancewear or comfortable clothing that you can move easily in and that allows us to see your feet, ankles, and knees.

  • Screens and follow-ups take 30-45 minutes each to complete.

  • The summary and training program will be provided electronically.

  • Screens cost $75.  Financial assistance may be available upon request.
